3D - Not what you expected

By Richard A. Muirragui on 14 October 2014

Sony's used to be "the best to get". Samsung and Vizio changed that. Even at this lower price, its not a good deal. What users need to consider is that 3D technology really hasn't taken off. Not practical when you have to additionally buy 3D video players, 3D games, and 3D glasses to enjoy the experience. Most owners of 3D TVs view their shows in 'normal' mode. Manufacturers have been trying for over a year to unload their 3D inventory because they are not selling. I would not invest in a 3D TV (of any brand) as they are already obsolote.

Great TV one small gripe......

Just picked up the TV today at Bestbuy, thing is a beast. I was gonna skip the 4k because there barely is any but the little that is out there, holy sh1t. I had to mess with the pic settings. I finally got it situated about two hours later lol. I did hit a snag though which was having the xfinity cable box connected to the Xbox one and having a Sony soundbar. For some reason the volume buttons on the Comcast remote no longer work. Other than that the TV is excellent. Much better than my 40" samsung led that I upgraded from!

Worth it.

This TV has a beautiful picture. Technically speaking, you can't get much better in 2014. Take the dive, you'll love it.

Good TV, but too many sacrifices had to be made.

I purchased this Sony 55 inch 4k TV from Best Buy on October 2nd. I returned the TV on the 4th for a full refund. Here's why.

Pros:
- The picture is actually quite good, I don't have a lot of experience with 4k just yet, but from what I can tell the picture was very good.

- The stand is adjustable. This is actually a really nice feature that I wish more TV manufacturers would mimic. The TV stand can be towards the outside of the TV like in the photos. Or the stand can be moved to an inside position, allowing you to place the TV on a much smaller stand. Far too many of today's TV's are being produced with a stand that requires a very large footprint. This creates problems when you only have a small area to rest your TV.- Playstation Now is a nice feature. Only if you do not already own a PS4 or PS TV. Otherwise that feature is pretty much worthless.

- 3D. It has passive 3D. Passive 3D doesn't require active shutter glasses and is much more like what you see at the theater. I have never been that into the 3D gimmick, but if you are the type that must have 3D. You're in luck.

- Ability to stream Netflix 4K content.

- HDMI 2.0

Cons
- There are a bunch of apps to choose from (good luck searching for them), but missing a few key apps. Even though it had a lot of apps to choose from, most of the other apps are lower quality and not all that great. Quantity does not equal quality. The lack of a Spotify app and a Vudu app were a big turn off. Basically, I have nowhere to watch all of my Ultra Violet content. They had a Flixster app, but it was pretty much worthless. I know what you are saying, "Cant you do all this with Chromecast?" Yes. But for $2K I shouldn't need too when competitors have the apps I want.

- The user interface. I found the user interface to be slow, clunky and hard to use. I looks okay, its similar to the PlayStation interface, but not nearly as fluid. I found a few of their menus very confusing to use.

- Even though I gave praise to the stand in the Pros section. It is also a con. The stand only lifts the TV about 3 inches from the surface. So unless you plan on wall mounting, you are going to need to get creative with whatever you place in front of the TV, like a sound bar. I had to put mine behind the TV, which is obviously not ideal.

- The "Digital Audio Out" (Optical) port did not work. I have a newer Vizio sound bar and could not, for the life of me, get it to function with the optical audio port. You could see light going through the cable, but no sound would come from my sound bar. The only audio out I could get to work was the headphone audio. Something I was not going to settle for. Ultimately, this was the main reason for my return. It just flat out didn't work, even though my Sound bar was working just fine.

- The controllers. The main controller (the one with actual buttons) is very boring and uninspired. The competition destroys Sony in this area. The minimal touch controller is interesting. But I found it very cumbersome to use, and not all that accurate. But compared to the competition, its kind of lame.

If all you need is a TV with a great picture, this is probably a good option. If you care about any of the stuff I mentioned above, you should probably look elsewhere.

Great TV......Amazon's Enhanced Delivery Is Terrible

By Davis on 5 October 2014

The Good: TV is great, everything I would expect from Sony XBR. I can only echo other reviewer's comments.

The OK: Sound could be better. TV legs are lacking, more below. Owner's manual is awfully light on info.

TV Legs: Two positions to attach them, the problem is the TV sets very low on the table/cabinet you use. I solved this problem by buying a pedestal from ShopJimmy, TV now sits 5 1/2 " above my cabinet, plenty of room for a sound bar, cable box, etc. You can buy the pedestal on Amazon or directly from ShopJimmy.com, I bought directly from ShopJimmy, the price was a little higher but shipping was free (making it cheaper) and I found a 10% off coupon online to use. Very sturdy pedestal, attractive glass base, had it assembled and the TV on it in a half hour. Comes with an allen wrench, you'll also need an adjustable wrench or socket/open end wrench to complete the assembly. ShopJimmy item #3755BB

The Absolutely Terrible: Amazon's "Enhanced Delivery"
I had to contact Amazon Customer Service after my tracking showed the shipper had contacted me twice in one day about delivery (I had been home all day, no calls from the shipper) CS contacted the shipper and called me back to say the shipper would contact me within a half hour, before ending the call the CS rep said he would call me the following Monday to make sure the shipper contacted me and set up delivery. The Amazon Customer Service Rep NEVER returned my call the following Monday.
The shipper did call, Amazon gave me a 9-22 delivery date, the shipper offered either 9-24 or 9-26, they acknowledged Amazon's 9-22 delivery date when I politely protested the other offered dates, ignored my protest and offered the other dates again. I was forced to accept the 9-24 date. The shipper's Bill of Lading clearly shows a due date of 9-22-14
My TV sat in the shipper's distribution warehouse for a week before being delivered. The shipper's warehouse is a 50 mile direct drive on Interstate 43 from me. I paid interest on my credit card charge while my TV collected dust in the shipper's warehouse.

I have sighted my delivery complaints twice to Amazon, at this writing it has been over a week since last contact. Amazon has not contacted me back to offer either an explanation or apology for the terrible delivery service. No matter what the ad says, I paid for that delivery service, and I didn't get what I paid for.
From their lack of contact I can only assume that a $2000 purchase means no more to Amazon than a $2 purchase.

This is a great TV, but do yourself a favor and buy from someone that understands a $2000 purchase is a really big deal, and will treat you accordingly.

Amazing TV, nothing bad about it

Amazing TV, nothing bad about it;

tho I do wonder if it was ok to use the same 4 screws in the wall mounting locations to mount the bracket to the TV for a wallmount, as they seem a bit small?
