Love it. Works great. Easy to setup and get our files backed up on it. Use for file backup and serving media content.

The great thing about Synology is it just works, November 14, 2014

My first one worked so well, I just purchased another one. I use a Synology 4 disk NAS (RS814+) with 10 TB as my primary storage for the office, then use a DS213j as the offsite replication and use a DS213j as a 3-month onsite backup. This gives me File Storage, Local Backup and Offsite Replication for Disaster Recovery. The great thing about Synology is it just works!

I am not very tech savvy so am a bit over my head with this. Luckily I have a tech savvy friend who has walked me through all the steps. Definitely not intuitive. If the UI was improved it would be ready for the average user. I bought it to turn into a DVR for OTA and it is doing that fine but the cost is hard to justify compared to using Huluplus. Total spend is about $550 if you factor in software and a BluRay player. I am using DVBLink which is about $50. Using a Sony BluRay which is about $80. A bonus is it works over the network so any tv with the DVBLink app works.

Don't buy this for use with media playback, November 12, 2014

I bought this as a quick and cheap NAS/Plex/DLNA box to feed TV and movies to my Roku and PS3. Unfortunately it was not the best choice. Here's why:

Pros:
* It is pretty
* The interface is nice. SSH access available as well.
* Can run apps like SABNZB, Couch Potato, and SickBeard/NZBDrone.
* Works well as a file storage/backup device.
* Raid support.

Cons:
* This particular version of Synology NAS does not have a plex server app. "Not powerful enough".
* No transcoding on video files.
* No sound on DTS files. Synology lost their DTS license so they ripped out support for DTS playback across there software.
* The DLNA client has problems indexing new files. Some packages like Sab download files, but they will never show up in the list of movies without running a manual command in the shell or logging into the interface.
* Not capable of fast download speeds. This box maxes out at around 2.5 MB/s on a good day. Nowhere near the 7 MB/s I get on my PC on the same network.

I'm going to keep this for use as just a straight file NAS. I'm buying an HTPC for the living room that will run Plex and store the video files on the NAS. For 200 bucks this is an OK NAS, but they really advertise features that I wouldn't recommend it for.

Great home server with a somewhat complicated setup (if you're not already familiar with these types of things), November 4, 2014

This review is from: Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage (DS213j) (Personal Computers)

I've been using this server for about two years now and it's performed flawlessly in that time. I'm not a big computer guy but I managed to get everything working without too much of a hassle. I was coming off an HP MediaSmart server that was less than stable in the time that I owned it.

I am running only a few services in this server: DS Audio, DS Video, DS Cloud, Squeezebox, DS File and DS Audio. I do not use it for streaming video as I don't think the processor and memory are up to the task. Synology makes other servers that are much better for streaming applications.

I think the biggest issue that I've had is with the sheer number of options that one is given for doing everything. The Disk Station Manager (DSM) software that runs on the server is common throughout the entire product line, from tiny home servers such as mine to much larger business appliances. This is great, but it means that for folks such as myself who are not power users, it may create a bit of confusion when getting everything set up (such as configuring port forwarding for external access). That said, I was able to get everything the way I wanted by doing some reading and asking a few questions on the Synology forums.

All in all, a great product with an enormous number of features for the home user.
